| Kathy's Southern Cooking By R. H. Duke Kathy's Southern Cooking is as close to authentic American regional cuisine of the south that can be found in Las Vegas, and can be experienced in the Green Valley/Henderson area.
A cozy 36-seat eatery that
is characteristic of those in the southland, Kathy's open kitchen, server's pass-through and counter, and an entire wall featuring a hand painted mural depicting a wide river, riverboat, and youths fishing from a dock is perfect ambiance for this style of cuisine.
Kathy Cook, a native of Vidalia, Louisiana (a name and birthplace conducive to her home-style cuisine) owned and operated a similar restaurant in San Francisco for seven years before arriving in Las Vegas in 1990 to establish
her business.
The limited menu displays traditional southern entrees such as fried catfish, chicken, pork chops, BBQ spareribs, BBQ hotlinks, as well as smothered pork chops, steaks, chicken, oxtail, meatloaf, and chitlins. Other specialties include the etouffe (catfish, chicken, or shrimp) and Creole-style catfish, chicken, or shrimp. Locals favor the seafood plate (etouffe, catfish, crab, and shrimp). For the vegetarian, try a choice of three sides and cornbread.
Such typical sides of blackeyed peas, cabbage, greens, beans, and yams round out an otherwise delicious dinner. And don't overlook the desserts that southerners crave--sweet potato pie, bread pudding, peach cobbler, or banana pudding.
I experienced and highly recommend the regular gumbo, a thick, hearty, and spicy broth filled with crab legs, shrimp, chicken, and sausage served with rice and crackers. Ask for the perfectly baked cornbread. The bread pudding was tasty
and moist, with a crisp outer crust that had me craving a second serving. This is home-style southern cooking at it's best in Las Vegas.
Prices are moderate, with entrees averaging $10.95, specialties about $14.50, and desserts at $2.99. Dinners include one side dish, cornbread, and a choice of rice or potato.
Kathy's talents have been recognized by many locals and groups, leading to a busy catering business for parties ranging from 50 to 1400. Take-out service is
also available.
